Tired of catching colds?

Cold season is definitely upon us! And unfortunately, it’s not uncommon to be exposed to two cold viruses at once, creating what can feel like an endless cycle of head cold after head cold this time of year.

The good news is that Traditional Chinese Medicine has some tried-and-true ways of preventing and even stopped those colds before they get the best of you. My favorite, as you already know, is by simply covering your neck when it’s windy or cold. This includes in air-conditioned rooms if there’s a breeze … but it’s safe to say air-conditioning isn’t a huge concern during a NY fall!

Before doctors understood germs, the ancient Chinese taught that the elements—including wind and cold—invaded the body and caused illness. Wind, which often brings cold along with it, invades through the pores of the skin at the back of your neck and the upper part of your back. In TCM, this area is known as the Wind Gate. In acupuncture, we use two main points to treat the common cold: Wind Pool and Wind Gate are both in this area.

The next time you catch a cold, take extra notice of your very first symptom. A day or two before your sore throat and sniffles start, the back of your neck will become sore. That’s because your Wind Gate was exposed to the elements—so make sure you keep it covered to reduce your chance of getting sick.

If you do find yourself under the weather, acupuncture can help relieve the congestion, aches and pains that come along with it. In the meantime, drinking the right herbs (often in a tea) can help your body naturally heal and fight colds. Sage honey, in particular, is great for easing your symptoms.

And remember: The best way to beat a cold is to get ahead of it! Regular acupuncture can help boost your immunity, setting you up for an easier cold and flu season. So you can get out there and enjoy our beautiful fall!
