How Acupuncturists Choose Points
One of the most incredible, and beneficial, things about acupuncture is that every single appointment is specific to the person receiving treatment. Of all the therapies available, acupuncture is one of the most individualized, taking into consideration everything from a person’s medical history to state of mind.
I’m often asked how I choose which points to use, especially when a patient notices that I’m using different points than their last visit.
Acupuncturists rely on a combination of diagnostic techniques, knowledge of meridian pathways, and an understanding of each patient's unique health patterns. No two acupuncture sessions are exactly alike—even for patients with the same condition.
The Body’s Energy Map: Meridians and Points
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) teaches that the body is interconnected through a network of meridians—energy pathways that run throughout the body. Along these meridians are acupuncture points, each with a specific function that can influence the body’s Qi, or energy flow.
When Qi is blocked or imbalanced, it can lead to pain, fatigue or illness. By selecting points along these meridians, we work to restore balance, relieve symptoms and promote overall wellbeing. The placement of the needles is intentional and strategic, often addressing multiple concerns at once.
Understanding the Whole Picture
One of the most powerful aspects of acupuncture is its holistic approach. Before determining which points to use, acupuncturists perform a thorough assessment, including:
A detailed discussion about symptoms, lifestyle and medical history
Looking at the tongue, which can reveal imbalances in different organ systems
Feeling the pulse at multiple positions on the wrist to assess the quality of Qi flow
Checking for areas of tenderness, tension or stagnation along the meridians
This allows your acupuncturist to see the bigger picture—not just treating symptoms, but addressing the root cause of imbalance.
Selecting the Right Points for Each Patient
Once we understand a patient’s needs, we choose specific points based on what we know . Some points are selected to stimulate circulation and reduce pain, while others help calm the nervous system, improve digestion or enhance immune function.
For example, a patient experiencing chronic stress and anxiety might receive treatment focused on points that regulate the nervous system, such as Shen Men (an ear point known for its calming effects) or Pericardium 6 (a wrist point often used for anxiety and nausea). Someone with lower back pain might receive treatment targeting points along the bladder and kidney meridians, which are linked to back support and energy regulation.
It’s also true that many acupuncturists have favorite, or go-to, points that they’re most experienced in and understand the benefits of.
The Importance of Regular Treatment
Because acupuncture works by gradually restoring balance in the body, regular sessions yield the best results. Many patients begin noticing improvements after just a few treatments, while others find that a longer relationship helps keep their energy levels steady and their discomfort at bay.
And like we mentioned above, you might notice that your treatment is slightly different each time you come in. That’s where our long-term relationships truly provide the best acupuncture outcomes. By working with a skilled TCM acupuncturist, you’re not just receiving a treatment—you’re embarking on a journey toward better health and balance. We’d love to be part of that journey with you.
