The Weird World of Acupuncture

If you’ve been following along on our social channels, you’ve seen our Weird World of Acupuncture posts throughout October. And I know, posting about the crazy things that can happen during acupuncture treatments might seem a little scary! But really, acupuncture is a fascinating practice, and our bodies respond to treatment in some incredible ways. Yes, sometimes they can be categorized as “weird.” But if we’re going to lean into the Weird World of Acupuncture, what better time than October?

So let’s catch up here with all of our posts. It’s important to remember that everyone responds to acupuncture differently and that, as always, your treatment might look very different from someone else’s—and that’s because every treatment plan is created together, specifically to meet your needs.

October might be over, but let’s enjoy one last look at some of the weird—but harmless!—things that can happen during an acupuncture appointment. Happy Halloween!

1. You might feel movement in different body parts during acupuncture. But don’t worry, that’s your Qi flowing—and it’s a very good thing because it’s a sign that your body is responding to treatment.

2. Acupuncture can make you have to urinate—a lot and quickly, depending on which points are used during your treatment. That’s partially because acupuncture can activate your parasympathetic nervous symptom, which regulates your bodily functions. So be prepared! Make sure you use the restroom before you leave your appointment, especially if your acupuncturist has used points on your abdomen.

3. Acupuncture can cause muscle twitching both during and after treatment. It’s your body’s harmless reaction to needle stimulation and should go away soon, but it can be fun to watch!

4. Did you know needles sometimes have a mind of their own? They occasionally slowly work themselves out during treatment, but if you have a lot of Qi, it’s possible for an acupuncture needle to actually shoot out! Painlessly, of course.

5. You might feel your Qi jump from your body to an acupuncture needle. No need to worry, though, it’s just being a little bit dramatic while doing its job.

6. Every breath you take, every move you make … you’re taking in Qi! Because Qi is all around us, our bodies are constantly replenishing and boosting the Qi in our system.

7. Acupuncture can make you feel heavy or even fall asleep. If you do, we’ll just gently wake you up at the end of your appointment. No jump scares here.

8. We saved the best for last. In true Halloween spirit, some people claim to see deceased relatives during treatment or feel like they’re floating. That could be because our Qi flows between us all, especially when we’re relaxed and focused.

In health and (weird) wellness,
Julie
